Along with several monks staying at the hotel, you start walking through the flooded streets toward the high ground across the flood plain. You try carrying your pack, but you need every ounce of strength to fight the raging water and keep your balance. Removing your passport, tickets, and papers, you throw the pack off and watch it float away.

It seems to take forever to reach the high ground. Actually only ten minutes pass before you arrive at a small outlying village crowded with refugees like yourself. The village turns out to be the site of a thriving silk manufacturing business. You’re stranded there for several days, so you have the chance to find out a good deal about the village’s history.

For a long while, you learn, the village was extremely poor. Ten years ago some monks arrived and taught the villagers how to raise silkworms on the surrounding mulberry trees. Then the monks taught them how to make silk thread and weave it into fabric. They explained dye techniques. One of the monks, who knew more than the rest, even helped design patterns for the fabric.

“And he wasn’t even Thai!” someone exclaims.

Excitedly you pull the faded news clipping about Thompson from your pocket.

“This man?” you ask, pointing to the picture.

Several people nod excitedly. One man says, “That monk left our village after the silk business was running smoothly. He has never returned, but if he did, he would get the welcome of a saint!”
